Banco Ambrosiano did not ask any of its internal functions to preserve its historical archive. Its family tree however records several acquired banks that were merged into the group mainly in two waves of acquisitions: during the 1930’s regarding the Venice region and during the mid 1970’s regarding the southern Italy regions. Racing against time, local repositories have been located and former employees have been traced and colleagues or retired employees have been interviewed in various locations. Ad hoc visits around Venice, in Campania, Apulia and Sicily have been made and company records of historical interest have been recovered, saving them from likely dispersion. Researchers may now peruse such records from 27 entities such as acquired Venetian banks, incorporated companies and liquidated banks, and incorporated banks from southern Italy.
