Gallerie d'Italia-Turin: a year of great contemporary photography

The image accompanying the News on the first year of activity of the Gallerie d'Italia-Turin, which hosted five exhibitions dedicated to the greatest contemporary photographers, over 150 events and 14,000 students, portrays the courtyard of the Galleries in Piazza San Carlo

The Gallerie d'Italia-Turin, Intesa Sanpaolo's museum in the city and the Group's fourth museum along with Milan, Naples and Vicenza, turns one year old: opened to the public in May 2022, it has become spaces for exhibition and reflection dedicated to photography and the digital world, in harmony with the city's history and its attitude towards innovation.

In the ten thousand square metres of exhibition space in Piazza San Carlo, Intesa Sanpaolo's Gallerie d'Italia in Turin have hosted five exhibitions dedicated to the greatest contemporary photographers, over 150 events and 14,000 students on 700 guided tours and educational workshops.

The museum's close ties to photography are also due to the fact the Gallerie d'Italia-Turin is home to the Intesa Sanpaolo Publifoto Archive: the collection consists of around seven million shots taken from the 1930s to the 1990s by one of Italy's leading photojournalism agencies.

In particular, three major original projects by internationally renowned photographers were shown during this year of activity:

In addition, the exhibition "La Grande Fotografia Italiana", dedicated to the masters of the history of 20th century Italian photography, was launched, with the exhibition dedicated to Lisetta Carmi, "Suonare forte".

The museum's exhibition itinerary is rounded out by the reception rooms on the first floor, in which a selection of works from the Group's collections are on display, including the cycle of paintings from the former Oratory of the Compagnia di San Paolo owned by the Bank, depicting episodes from the life of Saint Paul the Apostle.

In their first year of activity, the Gallerie d'Italia-Turin also hosted numerous initiatives in collaboration with museum and cultural institutions, associations and organisations, thus contributing to the city's cultural vibrancy.

The Turin museum, along with those of  Milan, Naples adn Vicenza, is part of Intesa Sanpaolo's Gallerie d'Italia museum project.
